Storm King's Thunder
“What if evil doesn't really exist? What if evil is something dreamed up by man, and there is nothing to struggle against except out own limitations? The constant battle between our will, our desires, and our choices?”
Alignment does not exist in this campaign world. There is no over-riding, tangible forces of Good and Evil in the world. Demons are not evil because they are made of the very tangible substance of what the gods declared was Evil. Paladins are not good because they are fueled by the very fabric of what the gods declared was Good.
Each character's background will define four characteristics – Personality Trait, Ideal, Bond, and Flaw. Each player can choose two Personality Traits, one Ideal, one Bond, and one Flaw. These will guide your role-playing. You may choose from these listed in the background or may define your own with those as guidance. This will define your character much more than saying he's "Lawful Good" can.
That said, this is a campaign for heroes. It's a story about saving the world from powerful, overwhelming forces at great personal sacrifice. Characters motivated by person power, greed, or corruption are going to be a poor fit with the campaign.
